This still bugs me. In steroid discussions I have been sympathetic towards Big Mac. Baseball turned a blind eye, and the fans loved the long ball. Then they start screaming when these guys get caught or come clean. At least he didn't look people in the eye and lie, he would always do the song and dance about the issue. Until today. Admitted the obvious by coming out, great. To say the reason he did it was to overcome injuries quicker? give me a break. Why does he think he had those nagging injuries. It was from bloated and overgrown muscles and tendons, and the weaker parts trying to keep up with them. He did this to gain an edge and bash. Why start lying now?
And then we get to Tony. His career as a manager is a fraud. He has ridden the coat tails of bloated heroes his whole career, and possibly even still today. His statements today insult the intelligence of baseball fans everywhere. Didn't know about it til today...has more respect for him now. So he finds out today that someone he has been very close to for a long time has been lying to him for 20 years. And that builds esteem in his eyes. This is nothing more than a franchise pandering to a fan base that is blinded by red. And sheltered by a placating media. This ends my Cardinal rant...for now As a side to this, this is in no way a reference to our resident card fan, cardinal1975.He is in the upper 99% of cardinal nation in regards to understanding what is really going on, not just in this matter but in the baseball world in general -------------------- ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

In some sense, you can say that McGwire and Sammy Sosa saved baseball in 1998 with that home run chase. This came four years after the baseball strike and it created a buzz around the league like no other.
In no way, shape, or form am I supporting steroid use. Just looking at the other side of the coin. -------------------- |

I read somewhere that if the Cards were in playoff contention, they'd add McGwire to the roster before August 31st so he's eligible to pinch hit for the playoffs. I think that's ridiculous.
Nobody's surprised that he used PEDs, but I'm surprised he actually admitted to using them. -------------------- Follow me on twitter: @thegabemyles

The roster addition won't happen, that would delay the Hall by another 5 years...
He is only admitting because of the coaching gig. He would still be in his don't want to talk about the past phase if not for that -------------------- ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

The roster addition won't happen, that would delay the Hall by another 5 years... That's an interesting point you bring up there. If he made a comeback, would his "5 year wait" reset? That might actually be a logical thing to do on his part because it would buy him some extra time for writers to analyze his career during the Steroids Era. -------------------- |

I believe it does reset if you find yourself back into a game. That was a bit tongue in cheek though, I don't believe today will have an effect on the voters.

Thank you for the kind words Cubby. Personally.....I do think LaRussa is overrated as a manager and his over specialization has affected the game for the worse. LaRussa is no Whitey Herzog.
As far as McGwire goes I never truly embraced him as a Cardinal and after the Senate hearings it seemed quite obvious he had used PED's despite dancing around the issue. I was very surprised to see him actually admit it even if it was an Andy Pettitte type of a "reason" |

Just saw the interview he had with Bob Costas on MLB Network. He seems sincere to win in his apology to the fans, players, teammates, etc.
MAH, if you're reading this, tomorrow's poll should be if you would vote for Big Mac for a plaque in Cooperstown. -------------------- |

I don't care that he admitted to using PEDs. He's probably trying to get some HOF votes out of this, but I'm not changing my opinion. I would never vote for McGwire if I had a HOF vote.

I'd be happy to ban all steroid users from the hall if baseball hadn't been so determined to look the other way. I mean, remember the Andro in McGwire's locker? Even THAT wasn't enough to spark some conversation about steroids in general. It STILL took Bonds before the game started to really change with its testing and attitude towards steroids.
Also, why is this different than greenies? I have not yet gotten a satisfactory answer. I'm sure greenies helped many players recover and play better and more focused, so they most assuredly affected the numbers we have from that era going forward... -------------------- ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Enemies are easier to find than friends. twitter @enosarris www.fangraphs.com/fantasy bloombergsports.mlblogs.com www.rotoworld.com www.lookingglassmagazine.com/playingfield |
