I am new to Fantasy Basketball so I was wondering what kind of percentages/averages you should have in each standard category??

12 teams-Standard Cats (FG%, FT%, 3PM, Pts., Reb, Asts, Stl, Blks, TO)
PG, SG, G, SF, PF, F, C, C, Utl, Utl BN, BN, BN, BN

So far my roster is: (I know FG% and FT% is weak)
PG-Baron Davis
SG-Josh Smith (SG/SF/PF)
G-
SF-
PF-
F-
C-
C-
Utl
Utl
BN

In my Yahoo winner's league (roto) last year, these were the first (and fourth) place spots in each cat:

FG .487 (.471)
FT .814 (.777)
3s 970 (725)
PTS 13543 (12596)
REB 5536 (4876)
AST 3332 (2719)
STL 936 (813)
BLK 758 (589)
TO 1349 (1553)

TOs are a tough category to avoid - the best players turn the ball over a lot. I usually win roto leagues and place in the bottom 3 in TOs routinely. I won this league and finished last in TOs.

thanks these numbers help out. Did you start the same # of players and positions for that?

Edit: also if you know the AVG that could help out because I imagine that there was lots of bench players that played on top of the starting roster so it is hard for me to predict it for mine.. the AVG would make it easier.

820 games played (so you can see the average, if that's what average you are talking about), same categories as your league.

That's 4th place in each category, not the 4th place team.

I hit 819 and won, the guys behind me were all around 790

Yeah that picture is really useful, thanks.

I always wondered, how do you do that? Is there some kind of gadget or software and if so what is it? (that can take shots of your web pages)

There's a button on my keyboard that says PrntScrn that copies the screen if I hit control and that button. Then I have to open up Photoshop to paste it. And photobucket.com to post it.

I like to look at this from a avg per player standpoint.

The reason this helps is that you can tell early on if your getting the production you need to do well in the cats you targeted in your draft.

Each league is different, so these are early targets, you'll have to figure out what it's going to take as the season progresses, but they'll put you in a position to do well.

FG% You'll need to be in the .460 range to do well in this cat. (the top team will probably be at .475 or so).

FT% You'll need be in the .785 range here, with the top team in the .810 range.

3PT An avg of 1.2 Three's per player will keep you competitive, 1.4 to 1.5 should take the cat.

PTS Anything below 14.5 per player is trouble in this cat.

REB 6.5 per player to contend here.

AST 3.7 per player to compete

STL 1.3 per player

BLK 1.0 per player

Again these are minimum targets to stay competitive in these specific cats, each league is different and you may need more or less in a specific cat. These averages will keep in contention in each cat while you make adjustments.

You probably can't hit ALL of these, but I've only seen one 8 cat team since I've playing, and it was MY TEAM in a rather weak Public ROTO league.

I lke to target 5 cats that I want to win (or close to it) and try to address two more (hoping to stay in the top 6) with my draft.

You win 5 cats, that's 60 points. Do OK in two others and you're in the 70's, this is trophy country.

Forget TO's unless you're in an active, competitive league. Abandoned and inactive teams owm this cat.

Great advice. And another reason to ignore TOs - very nice.

Just an addition: let your draft determine which categories you will target. So, in your draft, you're ahead in blocks, steals, and points, assists, and rebounds, and behind in the percentages. Probably better to keep going with your strengths rather than reach on percentage-strong players to even your team out. This building on strengths thing is probably the big difference between fantasy basketball and baseball, where you want to try and build a more well-rounded team.

Yep, that's great advice too, and in addition to your addition, don't waste the 30 minutes before the draft in idle chatter on the draft applet, spend it looking at what players are in the neighborhood of your picks to see if it mucks up your pre-draft thoughts. Don't get locked into a strategy and let the draft tell you which cats to target just as eno said (he's brilliant, listen to that guy!). After 6 rounds your looking for supporting pieces, not cat changers...

That's great advice guys. It should be noted that the league oddmanout is talking about is H2H not roto. I know cuz I'm in it (FL forum draft going on now) and I think he's doing pretty well for his first year in fantasy basketball.

on a minor note: 1.2 treys seems like a lot to stay competitive, considering if you have 4 or 5 bigs on your team who give you none then that means everyone else has to average around 2....(several moments later) But I took a look at BBM and that seems about right. Most guys SF or down average between 1.5 and 2+ from my brief observation. Makes me feel kinda bad about my Monta Ellis pick. Just another thing I gotta make up for.

What you guys were saying about trying to win categories your already strong in and forgetting the others I've always found really tough to do. I think the main reason is because it's fun for me to try to build a well rounded team (a.k.a. the perfect team). It means you sometimes get lesser value in your picks though which is also very troubling.

I know what your saying, the well rounded team approach is appealing. It's fun having a mega-cat team. It's also hard to do. I think trying to win specific cats is important in H2H also.

My philosophy is the same with both formats. I'll go to my grave (or until Stern changes the rules) believing guard oriented play wins fantasy championships. Don't give me the chance the build a team around Kobe. It's means I'm in the top 2 or 3 in the draft and my next two picks are going to be guards. Catch me if you can. biggrin.gif
